Mary Katherine Ball’s true passion was teaching people to read. She was motivated at an early
age by the teachers in her family. Mary entered eternal life on August 23 rd , 2026. She was born
to the union of Floy Foster and Harry L. Barnes on May 3 rd , 1934 in Hannibal MO. She grew up
in Muskegon, Michigan where she began her teaching career of 38 years. She later retired as a
Reading Specialist after 34 years at Milwaukee Public Schools. Mary received a BS Degree in
Elementary Education at Lincoln University, MO and a Masters of Reading Degree at Cardinal
Stritch University, Wisconsin. She also enrolled in many Reading Instruction classes at Michigan
State University. Mary was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church for over fifty years where
she chaired the Memorial/Endowment Fund, past President of the Christ’s chapter of
Presbyterian women, Scholarship, Nifty Seniors/Homeless Project and Church Historian.

Mary was past President of Epsilon Kappa Omega Milwaukee Chapter – Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority and a Life member of seventy years. She was a life member of the NAACP, African
American Alliance and Professionals Groups, Lincoln University Alumni and Retired Teachers
Association. Her second passion was Art in all forms and she enjoyed working with all forms of
Art media.

She leaves her Husband, Lloyd of 60 years, her Son, Winston and his Wife, Hayley and
Grandchildren Summer & Rio, Brother Milton Barnes of Memphis, Tenn., and many dear
relatives and friends. Memorials would be welcomed and appreciated to Christ Presbyterian
Church.
