Chime Melodie Braithwaite (1980-2023)

With profound sadness and enduring love, we announce the passing of Chime Melodie Braithwaite, aged 43, in her Milwaukee home on December 9, 2023. Born in Queens, New York, in 1980 to Leslie Ann Johnson and George Timothy Braithwaite, Chime’s life was a melody from its very beginning. Her early years in Queens were marked by her melodious presence, singing sweet melodies in her crib before she even spoke her first words.

Chime’s educational journey was diverse, reflecting her versatile personality. She attended P.S. 127 in Queens NY, Dowdell Middle School in Tampa FL, and Riverside University High School in Milwaukee WI. She further honed her skills with college-level courses at Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Her strong Christian faith was evident to all who knew her. She was confirmed Lutheran at Gospel Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, in 1994—a pillar of her life.

Chime’s professional life included a meaningful stint at the nonprofit, Boys Harbor in Manhattan NY. Her compassion and dedication left an indelible mark on all she encountered. In 2000, she returned to Milwaukee, where she faced her diagnosis of systemic lupus with characteristic strength and grace.

Chime’s life was not just her own but a tapestry of connections. She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Diana Johnson and Mary Cleopatra Athelia Forde. Her legacy lives on through her loving siblings Jasmin Song, Christopher, and Flame; her devoted parents, Leslie Johnson and George Braithwaite; her cherished nephew, Taharqa; and her dear cousins, Musette, Billy, Elizabeth, Jenna, Julian, Ella, and Diana.

In Chime’s memory, let us celebrate the melody of life she so beautifully sung. Her spirit, strength, and love remain an inspiration to us all.
