Resided in: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

**Rev. Dr. Trinette Vernell McCray**, 71, peacefully passed away on Ascension Day, May 29, 2025. A Milwaukee native, she was a trailblazing minister, educator, and advocate whose life was marked by faith, service, and justice.

Rev. Dr. McCray earned her B.A. from UW-Oshkosh and a Master’s in Religious Education from the Morehouse School of Religion, where she was ordained in 1981. She later received a Doctor of Ministry from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 2021. Influenced by Black liberation and womanist theology, she was a pioneer in both church and academic spaces.

She made history as the first clergywoman President of American Baptist Churches USA (2000-2001) and served in numerous national and local leadership roles. Her ministry extended to education, social justice, and public theology through her work at Cardinal Stritch University and the Urban Center-Milwaukee. An author, vocalist, and spiritual leader, she wrote *Vital Spirit, Vital Service*.

A cancer survivor of 11 years, she used her journey to minister to others, becoming a Certified Cancer Care Ministry Trainer. She was also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and a cherished aunt, godmother, and mentor to many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruth McCray, and her brother, Arnold. She is survived by her sister Linda A. Brantley, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a devoted circle of friends and mentees.

Her legacy is summed up in her words:
*”Ministry is life and ministry is service.”*

We give thanks for the remarkable life of Rev. Dr. Trinette V. McCray.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Trinette was my light in a murky season of my development. She was my angel. Will forever treasure her.

  2. Your Light continues to shine in the hearts you touched with your Faith, humor, Words, kindnesses, and Love. TY dear Sister and Friend for touching mine!

  3. Such a precious and brilliant soul. Few individuals in this city possessed her rare combination of radical, insurgent theological insight and compassionate, relatable spirit. Her presence and example will be missed, but she leaves an indelible legacy of showing us all how to live “The Way”❤️🙏🏾❤️

  4. I met Reverend Dr. Trinette when I was a college student at Cardinal Stritch University. She was a wonderful person and such an asset to the students she served. She led Bible studies on campus and ministered to students. Her impact was lasting. I have, and always will, remember her.

  5. A life well lived. Trinette living wasn’t in vain. She touched many throughout her journey. Well done, she’ll now take her rest in the “Land of No Mores,” no more pain, hurt, agony, medication, and discomfort. She will be with her Lord and Savior where there are pleasures forevermore. Heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those who were impacted by her ministry and her time with us.

  6. Thankful God permitted our path of Kingdom Service to intersect years ago as colleagues in the American Baptist Black Caucus and the General Board and more recently when the Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference met in Chicago. An inspiring kind committed servant of Jesus Christ who left her mark and made a difference.

  7. Trinette and I grew up together on 18th Street between Center and Clark Street. It was a time in the neighborhood when people’s neighbors were not strangers. My children do not remember her, but they do remember her brother, Arnold. She is missed by all who loved her. She left footprints in the sands that will last forever. Prayers for her family and friends, and her Sorors.
